Personal Colour > Colour in Fashion

The biggest challenge for any man or woman building his/her wardrobe is to establish his/her own personal style. Ideally, that can be adapted to current fashions, but sadly, many opt simply to follow fashion slavishly and never really find out about their own unique personality and style. Reconciling the desire to be fashionable with the need to feel comfortable and confident is more often than not a question of colours.

There is no doubt that the colours you wear will have a powerful effect on how you feel and - crucially - how others respond to you.

Everyone has a palette that works best to support their personality and you will always look and feel good in those colours; and it is even more fascinating than that. Within your own palette, there are five keynote colours that will support each of your basic psychological modes. This is entirely individual and, even if you and your best friend have similar core palettes, your best colour in, for example, a romantic situation will not necessarily be exactly the right one for her. The five psychological modes are:

· ROMANTIC. This is the colour that emphasises your sexuality when you are on a romantic date.
· POWER. Are you tired of being patronised? Wear the right colour and you will be taken seriously.
· FOCAL. Your focal colour will ease stress, when you are fraught and frazzled.
· DRAMATIC. The other kind of stress is weariness and depression. The right colour will lift your spirits and restore your energy.
· CONTRAST. When you are feeling great, full of energy, there is one colour that captures your whole personality and "throws it out" at the world. (This colour will not give you energy, you will need to be feeling good already - but it will make a strong impact).

Understanding your own palette makes wardrobe planning and shopping infinitely easier; if you look at colours first, rather than cut or style, you do not waste any time trawling rows of black garments, looking for one that will be right for you.

70% of ALL fashion items sold in Britain are black, despite the reality that the personality type that suits black is a very small percentage of the British population. When you consider that there are millions of colours available, this fact gives us an extraordinary insight into the minds of British people - why are they all enshrouding their true personalities?

Fashion will tell you that black is "sophisticated" "dramatic" and "safe" (aah!), so because the colour ranges available are predominantly black, that is what people feel they have to buy. Then fashion houses continue to provide predominantly black clothes, because it is the best-selling colour. This would seem to be a chicken and egg situation.

Whilst no one would sensibly suggest that you ignore fashion completely, it is well worth paying attention to your own personality, rather than trying to be a completely different person every time a new fashion idea is decreed. If, for example, you are warm and friendly, you love life and live it to the full, you are not going to be able to express yourself well, nor feel your best, in cold, draining colours and hard shapes, no matter how fashionable they are.

Better to be stylish.
